The Fokker F-27 Friendship was designed in 1954 by chief engineer Cees van Meerten to replace the Douglas DC-3. With 793 aircraft sold, the Friendship was the most successful West-European turboprop passenger aircraft. Later on, the ATR72 surpassed the Fokker. The F-27 was built in the United Stated by Fairchild.
