The MD-11 program was launched on December 30th, 1986 following various development studies of the Douglas DC-10. The first prototype flight took place on January 10th, 1990. It preserved the basic tri-jet configuration of the DC-10 with updated turbofans.

This reproduction is the month of December of the KLM Calendar.
